Your Guide to Getting Married in Spain: Essential Tips for American Couples

What I need to know as an American getting married in Spain?

Spain is a mix of historic charm, beautiful architecture, and has the Mediterranean vibe. It is a perfect wedding destination.

As an experienced wedding planner who has worked for Sandals International, I help American couples plan their dream weddings in this amazing region.

Here’s a list of  what you need to know if you are considering getting Married in Spain:

 1. Legal Requirements for Americans

Planning the legal details of an international wedding can be challenging, but it’s manageable with the right guidance. Here are the key legal aspects you need to consider:

Residency Requirement:
To have a legally binding wedding in Spain, one of you must have been a resident for at least two years. However, most couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in Barcelona and handle the legal paperwork in the U.S. Please take a copy of your marriage certification with you. They might ask you for it before entering the country and you need to show the proof you already got married.

2. Choosing the Perfect Venue

Barcelona region, Tarragona and the Costa Brava offer you a diverse range of stunning venues that can cater to every style and preference. From the Penedés region (vineyards) up to sea view weddings! We have it all!

  1. Old farms: The old farms also called in Catalan Masia’s! The perfect location offering you mostly accommodation for around 20 guests and a beautiful wedding venue.
  2. Castle’s: Yes, we have many beautiful castle’s which create the perfect venue for your wedding!
  3. Hotels: Many top hotels in Barcelona offer wedding packages which combines luxery with convenience!

 3. Cultural Considerations

It is always good to understand the cultural differences which will   enhance your wedding experience:

  1. Cuisine: Spanish cuisine is renowned for its flavors and variety. Incorporate local dishes like paella, tapas, and Catalonian specialties into your menu. The caterers are super flexible and can make any adjustments to your menu! Lately I had an American couple who wanted to a mix of Spanish/American food! It was a big success!
  2. Language:While many people in Barcelona speak English, having a translator or bilingual wedding planner can help navigate any language barriers.

4. Travel and Accommodation for Guests

Planning for your guests’ travel and stay is crucial:

  1. Flights: Barcelona is well-connected with direct flights from major U.S. cities.
  2. Accommodation: Offer a range of options, from luxury hotels to charming boutique stays, to cater to different budgets.
  3. Transportation: Arrange for shuttle services or provide information on public transport options to ensure your guests can easily navigate the city.

 5. Weather and Best Time to Marry

The Mediterranean climate makes Barcelona an ideal wedding destination year-round, but certain seasons offer specific advantages:

  • Spring (April-June): Mild temperatures and blooming flowers make this a popular choice.
  • Summer (July): July is a month which is very popular for couples getting married! Its a very nice month were you have a guarantee for good weather! Please note, I do not recommend to get married in August due to the very high temperatures.
  • Fall (September-October): Pleasant weather and fewer tourists make this a perfect time for a wedding. Also, October is seen as low season which is often lesser expensive in terms of venue rental.
  • Winter (November-March): Cooler weather but still relatively mild compared to most of the U.S., with the bonus of off-season rates.
